E Liberty Street closure for sewer line replacement

Portions of East Liberty Street to close

for emergency sewer line replacement

Rolling closure between Clay and Chestnut streets

LOUISVILLE, KY – During an inspection of a cave-in, MSD crews discovered that the sewer pipe under E Liberty Street between S Clay and E Chestnut streets is partially blocked with debris and deteriorated in several areas. This 36-inch brick sewer line was built by hand in 1872 and has served our community for 151 years.

Work to replace the pipe will begin on Monday, February 20, on the first section of E Liberty Street between Wenzel and Chestnut streets. That week will see saw-cutting of the pavement with a partial roadway closure. However, beginning February 27, that section of E Liberty Street will completely close to replace the pipe in that area. The repair process will move west one block at a time as each section is complete. The sidewalks in the work area will have local access only. Traffic detour signs will be in place.

There is no disruption of sewer service during the pipe replacement. The estimated completion date for the entire sewer line work is June 16, with paving and milling completed by July 7. However, all work will pause, and the roadway will open between April 21 to May 8 for the 2023 Derby Festival activities.
