Ohio River Sweep 1999 was a great success in Louisville and Jefferson County. Over 600 volunteers turned out in Louisville and Jefferson County, with approximately 15,000 taking part from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois for the eleventh annual event.
The event was held on Saturday, June 19. The volunteers gathered at 12 collection sites along 29 miles of riverbank in the Louisville area. They collected over 45 tons of trash and debris, ranging from car bodies and refrigerators to plastic cups and automobile tires.
Volunteers ranged in age from toddlers to senior citizens, and represented groups such as, Boys and Girls Clubs, Scout Groups and other volunteer organizations. Each volunteer received a commemorative T-shirt for their efforts.
This year’s sponsors included The Louisville Water Company, LG&E, Gresham Smith Engineers, Inc., BFI, Inc., and WHAS Radio. As in the past years, MSD was the local event coordinator.
