Morris Forman WQTC Alternative Solids Processing Update

August 2003

Final completion was obtained on August 15, 2003. Contractor is concentrating work efforts on completing warranty items and project closeout. Completed the 45-day dryer train reliability demonstration.

Solids Dryer Area – Dryer Trains No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 are in service producing dried pellets. Started burning digester gas in the dryers this summer.

Dewatering Area – The five new Alfa Laval centrifuges are in service.

Digester Area – All four anaerobic digesters are in service and digesting essentially all the primary sludge. The digester flare is in service to burn excess gas produced by the digestion process.

Odor Control – All odor control work is complete and the odors have been greatly reduced by eliminating the largest odor source the Zimpro system; conversion of the existing solids holding tanks to anaerobic digesters; replacement of the 2 solids dewatering centrifuges with 5 new high-solids centrifuges; addition of 4 rotary dryer systems, with each train including a dryer, venturi scrubber for particulate removal, and a thermal oxidizer for odor control.

Digester Gas Flare

December 2002

The project is 99% complete and nearing substantial completion. Started performance testing equipment this month and will complete in January. Reliability testing will start in January also.

Dewatering System – The dewatering portion of the project is complete. Five new dewatering system centrifuges and screw conveyors are currently in operation.

Digester Area – Digester No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are in service and in the acclimation phase. The new digester gas flare is in service to burn the gas produced by the digestion process. Most of the gas produced by the digestion process in the near future will utilized to supplement natural gas for the four dryer trains.

Solids Dryer Area – Dryer Trains No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are in service and are providing increasingly reliable service as system debugging continues.

New dewatering area centrifuge & four reconstructed digesters and gas equipment.

June 2002

The project is 96% complete.

Dewatering System – The dewatering portion of the project is complete. Five new dewatering system centrifuges and screw conveyors are currently in operation.

Digester Area – Digester No. 1, 2 and 3 floating lids have been constructed and gas-mixing equipment installed. Digester No. 4 floating lid construction is nearly complete. The digesters are currently being utilized as solids storage tanks. They will soon be converted into digesters once the digestion system gas piping is complete.

Solids Dryer Area – The equipment for the sludge drying trains has been installed in the Main Equipment Building. Andritz the sludge dryer manufacturer and Plant Staff are currently operating Dryer Train No. 1 and 2 producing dried pelletized biosolids. Dryer Train No. 3 is currently being placed into operation also. Dryer Train No. 4 will be available for operation in August 2002. The subcontractor completed demolition of the old Zimpro process piping and heat exchangers this month.

ASP public presentation and tour was conducted in May 2002.

September 2001

The project is 87% complete and currently ahead of schedule. The dewatering portion of the project is nearly complete and scheduled for centrifuge startup late September 2001. Digester No. 2 and 3 floating lids have been constructed and gas mixing equipment installed. Digester No. 1 floating lid construction started on September 12. Contractors are currently installing equipment for the four sludge drying trains located in the Main Equipment Building (MEB). Continued installation of steel support beams between floors and for the fertilizer pellet storage silos in the MEB. Electricians have installed all of the new electrical substations and currently are pulling and terminating wiring for the new equipment. Work continues on the Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers and the stainless steel odorous air duct from the MEB to the oxidizers. Black & Veatch recently completed ASP Dewatering System training.
