Louisville MSD Flood Protection Supervisor JP Carsone (pictured standing) is serving as Team Lead for Louisville Metro and the Commonwealth of Kentucky Regional Resiliency Assessment Program to develop a plan for catastrophic urban flooding, which could occur if Louisville’s Ohio River Flood Protection System (operated and maintained by MSD) experienced a failure during a heavy rain event.

Louisville was one of 12 nominees selected by the Department of Homeland Security for this three-year program. A catastrophic urban flood plan does not currently exist on the state level in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

On February 22, Louisville MSD hosted team members from several emergency response agencies, including Louisville EMA, the Louisville District of United States Army Corps of Engineers, Kentucky Emergency Management Services and the Department of Homeland Security.

Evacuation planners form the Federal Environmental Management Agency will visit MSD and the Ohio River Flood Protection System on March 1. A kickoff meeting for local stakeholders will take place on April 4.
